Why "Gore" Ram? - Gore Ram Mandir history

The name “Gore Ram” comes from the Marathi word Gore (fair/white), referring to the pristine white marble used for the idols. It was named this to provide a clear contrast to the famous “Kalaram” (Black Rama) temple nearby. While Kalaram represents the Lord’s grounded power in black stone, Gore Ram symbolizes purity and joy through its fair, luminous appearance.

While the world knows the “Black Rama” of Kalaram, the “Fair Lords” of Nashik hide two centuries of Peshwa-era secrets within their walls.

Shri Goreram Mandir (The Muthe Wada Temple) - Story

A Fortress of Faith in Teakwood

The Story of the Muthe Family: In the mid-1700s, Nashik was the spiritual heart of the Maratha Empire. This temple was built as a private “Dev-Ghar” (God’s House) by the Shrimant Muthe family, who were elite Sardars (commanders) under the Peshwas. It was constructed after the passing of Mr. Bhikaji Muthe, a revered Samnyāsi, in his honor.

The “Wada” Architecture: Unlike stone temples, this structure is a Wada—a traditional two-storey fortified mansion.

  • Climate Responsive: Built with thick mud-brick walls and a sloping clay-tile roof, the temple stays naturally cool in summer and dry during Nashik’s heavy monsoons.

  • Master Craftsmanship: The interior features a stunning timber grid of teakwood columns and beams decorated with intricate “banana flower” carvings.

The Guardian’s Gaze: Following the layout of the Kalaram Mandir, a small Hanuman shrine stands at the entrance, with his eyes perpetually fixed on the feet of Lord Rama.
