Anupan Shila: Guru Gorakhnath's Magic Rock

The word “Anupam” means completely unique, and this massive boulder in the holy Brahmagiri Mountain (Kaulgiri) area proves it. A huge, ancient tree grows straight out of the solid stone! At its base, you will also find the sacred marks of the Saati Asara (seven water fairies) protecting the mountain. But the real magic is the history that happened right on top of it.

The Gorakhnath Gufa & Stopping the Dark Magic

Hundreds of years ago, corrupt magicians (tantriks) were using dark magic. To save the world, the great Guru Gorakhnath went into deep meditation in the Gorakhnath Gufa  until he unlocked supreme cosmic power.

He then walked out and climbed onto the giant Anupan Shila. Blessed by Lord Shiva and Saptashrungi Mata, he called upon the 84 great Siddhas (perfected masters). Right on this rock, he taught them a pure, powerful magic called Shabari Vidya. Using this knowledge, the 84 Siddhas destroyed the dark magic and saved the people!

But the real magic lies in its history. Trimbakeshwar is considered the very first home of the Nath holy order. It was right here at Anupam Shila that the great Yogis did their deep meditation. By praying on this rock, they received the holy grace of Lord Adinath (Shiva) and the loving blessings of Saptashrungi Mata. Because of these blessings, the Yogis gained supreme magical knowledge known as Shabari Vidya.

The Miracle of the River Ganga

One day, 60,000 proud holy men were bathing in the river down below. Guru Gorakhnath wanted to teach them a lesson about pride. He turned himself into a cute, playful little boy and jumped into the water with them, happily shouting, “Har Har Gange!” The proud men got angry and scolded the child. “Silly boy,” they said, “This is the Godavari River, not the Ganga!” To show them the true power of a perfect Yogi, the little boy climbed up onto the Anupan Shila. With his magic, he commanded the real River Ganga to appear. Suddenly, a stream of the holy Ganga burst right out of the solid rock! The 60,000 men were shocked. They realized the little boy was actually the supreme Guru Gorakhnath, and they immediately bowed down to him.

Because of this beautiful miracle, thousands of holy Sadhus still gather at this exact rock every 12 years to take a holy bath!

How to Reach & Important Alerts ⚠️:

    • 📱 Ola/Uber Issues: App cabs cannot pick you up inside the station. You can book them, but you must walk 5 to 7 minutes outside to the Ambedkar Statue (near the petrol pump) to actually get in your cab. Note: Do not rely completely on this, as local drivers often harass app drivers and force cancellations.

  • From Nashik Road Station: Take a city bus or shared auto to New CBS (Thakkar Bazar).
  • From CBS to Trimbakeshwar: Board a direct MSRTC bus. They run every 15-30 minutes and will drop you in Trimbakeshwar (about 30 km away)

Anupan Shila is located near Gangadwar on Brahmagiri Mountain, you have two simple choices to reach it.

Option 1: The Walking Route (750 Steps)

  • The Path: You can start walking right from the Trimbakeshwar town center. Near the Nivruttinath Temple, you will find a staircase going up the mountain.
  • The Climb: You have to climb exactly 750 steep stone steps to reach the top.

Option 2: The Driving Route (The Easy Way)

If you do not want to climb 750 steps, you can take a vehicle to the back of the mountain.

    • The Path: From the main Trimbakeshwar gate, turn right onto Jawhar Road. Drive for 4 km until the road splits into three. Take the first left (look for the Gangadwar board). After 1 km, take another left at the next big Gangadwar board.
    • The Drive: This road goes very steeply uphill. If you are riding a bike, make sure it has good power.
    • By Auto-Rickshaw: You can easily hire a rickshaw from Jawhar Road. They usually charge ₹500 for a one-way drop, or ₹800 for a return trip (which is a great deal if you share with friends).
