Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027 Traffic Plan: No-Vehicle Zone & 3-Tier Parking System

NASHIK: Authorities have finalised a comprehensive traffic management plan to handle the expected surge of devotees during the upcoming Kumbh Mela. The strategy focuses on strict vehicle restrictions, structured parking systems, and controlled pedestrian movement to prevent congestion across the city.

Strict No-Vehicle Policy in City Areas

As part of the plan, private vehicles will be completely restricted from entering the city during peak days, especially on major bathing dates.

Officials stated that:

  • Private cars, tourist buses, and non-essential vehicles will be barred
  • Entry points will be sealed with strong barricading systems
  • Enforcement will be strict to avoid traffic congestion

The move comes after traffic challenges experienced during previous large-scale gatherings.

Three-Tier Parking System Introduced

Authorities have introduced a three-tier parking model to streamline traffic flow and reduce pressure on city roads.

Outer Parking Zones Identified

Large parking areas are being planned on the outskirts, where all private vehicles will be stopped.

  • Located around 7 to 12 km from key ghats
  • Sites identified along major roads such as:
    • Peth Road
    • Dindori Road
    • Dhule Road
    • Pune Road
    • Mumbai Road

These zones will act as the primary checkpoints for incoming traffic.

Shuttle Transport for Inner Movement

From the outer parking areas, devotees will be transported via government-operated shuttle buses.

  • Only authorised buses will operate beyond outer zones
  • Dedicated routes will be used for faster movement
  • Drop-off points will be closer to the riverfront

Limited Parking Inside City

Authorities have also mapped 35 designated parking locations within the city.

  • Includes both on-street and off-street parking
  • Total capacity of approximately 4,800 vehicles
  • Intended for controlled and essential use

Indicative parking charges have also been proposed, with nominal hourly rates for different vehicle types.

Pedestrian-Only Access Near Ghats

The final stretch toward key bathing areas will be strictly pedestrian.

  • Vehicles will not be allowed near the ghats
  • Dedicated walking routes have been planned
  • Movement will be regulated to avoid overcrowding

Officials said this step is crucial for ensuring safety during peak footfall.

Focus on Crowd Control and Safety

The overall strategy follows a structured movement system:

Outer Parking → Shuttle Transport → Walking Access

Authorities believe this approach will significantly reduce congestion, improve crowd flow, and enhance safety during the event.

Conclusion

With a strict no-vehicle policy, a newly introduced three-tier parking system, and regulated pedestrian access, officials aim to ensure smoother traffic management during the Kumbh Mela. The plan reflects lessons learned from previous events and a stronger focus on public safety and efficient crowd control.
